Wk: 7 Assignment#1 Introduction to the concept of Multimodality/Second Life

The article Theories and Practices of Multimodal Education points out how "text" has expanded to include multiple modes of representation, with combined elements of print, visual images, and design. Additionally, children's literature has changed the definition of text with various forms of representation. Moreover, with these changes in children's literacy, teachers and students can interact with the characters and the plot in new ways. Multimodal creates a new direction in literacy learning. This article also points out the transition from print-based education to multimodel education; this new reality has created a shift in reading. Students must be able to deal with the unique demands of digital media and visual text, which requires new ways of coding and decoding text images. However, the benefits of multimodal text create different access points for the learner. Thereby increasing student engagement.

The second article, Using The ADDIE Model to Design Second Life Activities for online Learners, introduces Second Life which is a3D- Virtual User environment. Additionally, second life provides a near-real-life environment and gives users access to objects or phenomena impossible to observe or examine in real life. Second Life also gives a sense of social presence. " social presence" refers to a sense of being together with someone. Social presence is essential for students in an online experience. Social presence is important to building a strong sense of community to connect online learners.
Additionally, with SL you experience your environment as a personalized avatar. Also, these avatars engage in verbal and non-verbal communication as in real life. With the use of posturing and text and voice chat. Lastly, SL creates a social context where students interaction creates a great learning experience.
